Ingnition Interlock Devices

What is an Ignition Interlock Device?

This is a device which is a bit larger than a cell phone. The device is wired to your vehicle’s ignition and requires that you breathe into it before the engine can be started. If the device registers alcohol on your breath, the car’s engine will not start. Further, as you drive the device will require periodic breath samples. This is to ensure that the person who originally breathed into the device is the person who drives the car and there is a continued absence of alcohol in the driver’s system.

Why am I being required to install one in my vehicle?

In Massachusetts if you have 2 or more OUI convictions, you will be ordered to have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle as a condition of your license reinstatement. Massachusetts IIDs

Do Ignition Interlock Devices prevent drunk driving?

The International Council on Alcohol, Drugs, and Traffic Safety insists that these devices, when combined with a comprehensive monitoring and service program, lead to a 40% to 95% reduction in repeat drunk driving rates.

Could someone “trick” the device by using a balloon or other item which could mimic human breathing?

No. New technology includes sensors which will either accept or reject samples. The devices are equipped to reject such samples and prevent the vehicle from starting if they are attempted to be used.
